At its core,Geometry Dash is a rhythm-based platformer stripped down to its most essential elements. You control a geometric avatar — usually a square — that moves forward automatically through a corridor of obstacles. Your only real input is a jump. Tap, and the square leaps. Release, and gravity pulls it back down. That is the entire control scheme, and yet from this simplicity emerges an astonishing depth of challenge.
The obstacles come in several familiar flavours. Spikes kill you on contact. Blocks can be landed on safely from above but will destroy you if you hit their sides. Later levels introduce portals that flip gravity, resize your avatar, or transform it into a ship that flies freely through narrow gaps. Each new mechanic stacks onto the last, so by the time you reach the harder stages you are juggling gravity flips, speed changes, and vehicle swaps all within a few seconds of each other.
